William De FERRERS 7th Earl of Derby [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 about 1193 in Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. William married 4 Sibilla MARSHALL before 14 May 1219.

Other marriages:
QUINCY, Margaret De

Most authorities name this William the 5th Earl of Derby not taking into account that his grandfather William de Ferrers was a Templar and was not allowed to bear a coat of arms. He was the 5th Earl of Derby and his father, Robert de Ferrers, was stripped of his coat of arms because of his rebellion and was 4th Earl of Derby. These two Ferrers' show no armorials and are skipped by many authorities but not by all. Cecil Stewart Filmer Ferrers(among others) in his book, "The Ferrers Family History" shows all eight Earl Ferrers' of Derby instead of the usual six.

The Chartley line is through William's oldest son, Robert 8th Earl of Derby. The Groby line is through his second son, William 1st Baron of Groby.

William De FERRERS 6th Earl of Derby [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 in 1172 in Tutbury, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom. He died 3 on 22 Sep 1247 in Duffield, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom. William married Agnes De KEVELIOC also known as Meschines.

William's death is erroneously said to have died in Chartley Castle, of the gout-- in fact his gout-related death was due to injury, as recounted in an anecdote in Burke's: "His lordship, who from his youth had been a martyr to the gout, and in consequence obliged to he drawn from place to place in a chariot, lost his life by being thrown through the heedlessness of his driver over the bridge at St. Neots, co. Huntingdon." He died in an inn enroute to Chartley, and Agnes his wife of 55 years died upon the arrival of his body-- so he was not conveyed to Merevale Abbey (as has been reported), and the two of them were given a joint funeral and burial at Chartley.

Agnes De KEVELIOC also known as Meschines [Parents] 1 was born 2 about 1174. She died 3 on 2 Nov 1247. Agnes married William De FERRERS 6th Earl of Derby.

Agnes de Kevelioc, alias Agnes of Chester, was Lady Chartley in her own right, and conveyed that honor into the Ferrers family as he dowery. She and the Earl were married for over 50 years, died within days of one another, and were given a joint requiem on their burial together.

The Ferrers family kept Chartley for generations even though William held it in tail for the duration of his wife's life-- it has been said the portentous nature of their double burial there had some influence on the King's conveyance of Chartley to William's son the 5th Earl.
