John PRESBURY

1Province and Court Records of Maine, multiple vols., 2 (1931): 196 (digital images, Hathi Trust). "Footnote, probably written by Charles Thornton Libby, editor, reads, “If the word presbytery was shortened in common speech, this might explain the Recorder’s calling this man’s name Presbyter and Presbury. His spelling it Praesbitery [p.31], indicates this idea. Preston, in another record, is only a translation of Presbury.” To this passage and for reasons unknown/not otherwise explained, he adds, “The descendants came down as Presbry.”.".

2William Richard Cutter, _Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts_, vol. 2 (1908); digital images, _Internet Archive_ (accessed 2013), 2:873-877, for Presson Family. "Willlam Presson (pg 873) "[...] married, August 6, 1781, by the Rev. Samuel Chandler, Abigail, daughter of John Sargent, who was a son of John Sargent, who was a son of William Sargent, the latter the first settler of the family in Gloucester and the survivior of all of the early settlers in that town..."

Refers to "William Presson or Praesbury" as son of John. William's wife as Priscilla Randall. Refers to his father as "John Presson, or Praesbury"; provides information, but says John's "death is recorded in 1687" [perhaps 1678 was intended, as the inventory of John's estate was taken March 1678/9.]

Includes notation about John Presbury's wife, saying "there appears no distinct account o his wife, her name, their marriage, nor anything by which may be detemined the names of all their children ..."
