Greek Orthodox services for Charles G. Poolitsan, 74, of 403 N. Walnut St., who died Tuesday at Bloomington Hospital will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Allen Funeral Home. Father James Bousakis will officiate. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Born July 4, 1906, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of George C, and Angelika (Zaharako) Poolitsan. His parents had come to America in the 1890s from Sparta, Greece, and settled in Bloomington in 1906, opening the Candy Kitchen on the square in that year. After the candy shop closed in 1926, the four boys decided to open a restaurant near the comer of Fifth and Indiana, the former site of the Book Nook Restaurant. Specializing in Greek food, The Gables was owned and operated by the Poolitsan brothers from 1932 until 1968. The family owned the building during the time in which Hoagy Carmichael wrote "Stardust' at the Book Nook. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Indianapolis and the Elks Club, of which he was past exalted ruler. Survivors include his wife, Ruby P. (Farr); two daughters, Barbara S. Adams of White Pines, Tenn., and Angelika Halstead of Plainfield; two brothers, Peter C. of Bloomington and Nick G. of Pompano Beach, Fla.; one sister, Catherine Topolgus of Bloomington; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Chris. Friends may call at the funeral home 2-9 today. An Elks memorial service will be held 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Born Jan. 5, 1905, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Willard and Maggie (Whisenand) Farr. She was a retired medical assistant and x-ray technician with Dr. James N. Topolgus. Survivors include two daughters, Ann Halstead of Speedway and Barbara Adams of Marietta, Ga.; two brothers, Wallace Farr of Texas and Earl Farr of Illinois; one sister, Oneta Smith of Nashville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Poolitsan, in 1981; and two sisters, Cecil Wright and Gay Griffin. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington with the Rev. Terry Allshouse officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.
