Josiah was the son of Joseph Hill, who died well advanced in years, and Susan Hill, who subsequently married a Mr. Cole. Josiah was by trade a carpenter, came to Clinton, IA, in 1863, and died in Sept.1893, at the age of seventy-six years. He was a member of the Methodist church. He was four times married, his first wife being Mary French, of Billerica, MA who died at the birth of their daughter:
1. Mary, the wife of George Dustin, now living at 3422 Carroll Ave., Chicago.
For his second wife he wedded Mary Carter, by whom he had three sons:
2. George C., a Civil War vet and for over 30yrs. a locomotive engineer;
3. Joseph M., a resident of North Wilmington, MA;
4. John B., of Clinton, Iowa.
Mr. Hill secured a divorce from this wife about 1854 in MA and about 1859 he married Emily Farr, of Manchester, N. H., by whom he had three children:
5. Dora Susan, now Mrs. B. B. Thornton, of Cheney, Washington;
6. Harriet Sophronia, the wife of James McGinnis, of Sioux City, IA;
7. Willie J., deceased.
The mother of these children died at Clinton in Jan. 1865, and the father married her sister Dorothy Farr in Nov. 1867. They had two children:
8. Emily, now Mrs. John L. Burke, of Fremont, NE;
9. Olin Edgar, a druggist of Clinton, IA.
