Mary Katherine Farr Harrison, 88, died March 12 at Norman Regional Hospital following a short illness.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dwight Helt officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Norman. Services are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home. Mary K. was born November 28, 1920, in Clinton to Doane and Ione Farr. She grew up in Clinton and attended Lindenwood University, St. Charles, Missouri, and the University of Oklahoma, graduating from OU in 1942 with a Bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis on dance. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. While at OU, she obtained her pilot license.

She married Roger Harrison in Clinton on July 4, 1942. After Roger was discharged from the service in 1946, they made their home in Altus. She taught several classes of dance in Altus (ballroom and square dancing, tap and ballet) and also taught physical education at Altus High School. She and Roger moved to Norman in 1962.

In Norman she was an enthusiastic supporter of the University of Oklahoma, especially the OU School of Dance, helping to found the Dance Partners support group in 2002. She was on the Board of Visitors of the College of Fine Arts at OU and was a member of the President's Associates Program since its beginning in 1979. She was an OU football season ticket holder for over 50 years. Mary K. was also active in her community. She served on Governor Bellmon's Council on Physical Fitness. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. For many years, she was a member of the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church and the Assistance League of Norman. She enjoyed traveling and went on her first long trip with her family to the World's Fair in Chicago in 1933. She went on her first overseas trip to Havana, Cuba, in 1940. When at OU, she participated in the Experiment in International Living for one summer in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she became fluent in Spanish. She and Roger traveled extensively, with visits that included Europe, Japan, Australia, and South America. Many of these trips were to play golf—she was an avid golfer and was very proud of having made not just one, but TWO holes-in-one. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Roger.

She is survived by her brother Jack Farr and his wife Genevieve of Muskogee; three sons, Dr. Roger Harrison Jr. and wife Kathy of Norman, Doane Harrison and wife Julie of Norman, and John Harrison of Edmond; eight grandchildren, Dr. Mike Harrison and wife Terra of Madison, Wisconsin, Zack Harrison of Norman, Holly Harrison of Dallas, Beth Harrison of Denver, Emily Harrison Brink and husband Curtis of Denver, Jordan Harrison and wife Chelsey of Atlanta, Meghan Harrison of McKinney, Texas, and Caitlin Harrison of Norman. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial contributions be made to the OU Foundation Dance Partners Fund, OU School of Dance, 560 Parrington Oval, Room 1000, Norman, OK 73019.

Savaiano, Dr. Eugene, age 96, passed away Friday, June 11, 2010. Memorial service: Wednesday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. at East Heights United Methodist Church, 4407 E. Douglas. Reception to follow. Gene was born December 15, 1913, in Osage City, Kansas. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Emporia State Teacher's College and then taught Spanish, French and music at Sapulpa Junior College. He entered the Army in 1942 and served in Military Intelligence in the European theater, 1944-1946, retiring from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel. Gene began his career at Wichita State University in 1946 and became Head of the Spanish Department in 1947 (and later Chairman of the Romance Language Department). He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1948 and married the love of his life, Geraldine Farr, in 1949. Gene believed passionately in the value of communicating with people of other cultures. He dedicated his career to teaching foreign languages and training teachers from all over the U.S. to carry on this work. He was an innovator in combining academic study and immersion in a foreign culture. He directed eight National Defense Education Act Institutes for Spanish teachers in Wichita and Puebla, Mexico, from 1961 to 1969. Gene and Jerry founded the WSU Summer Program in Puebla, Mexico, which continues to this day. Gene was the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese for ten years. He coauthored 2001 Spanish and English Idioms, which is still in print today. Throughout his career, Gene influenced and inspired thousands of students and teachers. He retired from WSU in 1984 and dedicated himself to travelling the world with Jerry and to gardening at his home, his church and Botanica. Gene had a remarkable ability to cultivate and enjoy friendships throughout his life. His family is grateful to the many friends who surrounded him. He is survived by son, Charles Savaiano of Carbondale, Colorado; daughter, Nicky (Steve) Llamas of Wichita; son, Tony (Peggy) Savaiano of Wichita; nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Savaiano, Geraldine, "Jerry," age 91, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2007. Memorial service: Monday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. at East Heights Untied Methodist Church, 4407 E. Doulgas. Reception to follow. Jerry was born June 19, 1915, in Deadwood, South Dakota, and attended high school in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees at Emporia State Teacher's College and did graduate work at the University of Chicago. Jerry taught at Baker University, Ward Belmont and Hannibal LaGrange colleges and the Universi ty of Panama. She was principal of Lima High School, Lima Peru. She married Eugene Savaiano in 1949 and became an adjunct professor of Spanish at Wichita State University, and administrative assistant of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and a teacher of culture and oral Spanish in WSU's National Defense Education Act Spanish institutes. She later became teacher in the WSU Summer Program in Puebla, Mexico. Jerry was a very creative person, having conceived and written the proposal for the NDEA institutes for teachers of Spanish. She encouraged using audio-visual aids in the teaching of foreign languages long before it became popular and introduced Spanish teaching through television by offering courses on Channel 12 on Saturday mornings in the early sixties. She produced Spanish and Portuguese traveling culture units, which were sent from school to school across the country. Jerry's creativity extended to painting, sculpture and writing poetry. She was a member of east Heights United Methodist Church United Methodist Women, the council of University Women, University Dames, the Present-Day Club, the Friday Book club and the American Association of University Women. Jerry is survived by her husband, Gene; son, Charles Savaiano of Carbondale, Colorado; daughter Nickey Llamas of Wichita; son, Tony Savaiano of Wichita; 9 grandchi ldren and one great-grandson. Memorials have been established at United Methodist Open Door Ministry and Total Homecare and Hospice. Quiring Old Mission Mortuary.
