He was buried 6 in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, United States. Harley married 6, 7 Lucretia Maria WHITNEY on 20 Sep 1858 in Springfield, Windsor, Vermont, United States.

Other marriages:
PERRY, Esther Louise (Clark)

Lucretia Maria WHITNEY 1 was born 2, 3 on 30 Sep 1836 in Bridgewater, Windsor, Vermont, United States. She died 2, 3 on 15 May 1897 in Putney, Windham, Vermont, United States. Lucretia married 2, 3 Harlan Page FARR "Harley" on 20 Sep 1858 in Springfield, Windsor, Vermont, United States.

The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

There follows accounts of the death of Louise's third great grandmother, Lucretia (Whitney) Farr. I found these accounts among my mother's papers after her death and presume they originally belonged to my grandfather, Willis Vernon Farr. It is stated in one of the accounts that Lucretia's grandfather, Joshua Whitney, was the first settler of Bridgewater, Vermont, but this is disproved (see last page of this section).

“Mrs. Harlan Farr died Saturday after an illness of less than two weeks, although she had not been in good health for a long time. They had this spring moved into the village and she was anticipating much pleasure in her new surroundings but she had a stroke of paralysis and steadily declined. She was a very social woman, a kind neighbor and will be much missed. She leaves only one child a daughter of fifteen. Her funeral was attended by Revs. Wiswall and Mitchell on Monday and she was buried beside her son in Westminster.”

“She leaves only one child a daughter of fifteen” of course, was an incorrect statement, and the following account of Mrs. Farr's death correctly shows her to have also left a son.

“Death of Mrs. Harlan P. Farr
“Lucretia Whitney, 61, wife of Harlan P. Farr, died about 9 o'clock Saturday morning from the effects of a shock of paralysis May 3. She had had heart disease for over a year, and under the strain of the paralytic stroke her heart was unable to maintain its action. Mrs. Farr was born in Bridgewater, this state, in that part of the town known as Bridgewater Hollow. Her father was Joshua Whitney, whose father was the first settler in Bridgewater. Her father died In 1848, and when she was 16 years old the moved to Westminster with her mother. She married Mr. Farr of Westminster and continue to live there until they moved to East Putney, where, for many years, Mr. Farr has been a prosperous farnier, working several hundred acres of land. About two months ago Mr. Farr bought and moved into the F. 0. Pierce house, on the Brattleboro road in this village. Mrs. Farr was striken with paralysis while working in her kitchen, and steadily failed until the end. The funeral was held at the house at 1 o'clock Monday, Rev. E. F. Mitchell officiating. The burial was in Westminster. Besides her husband Mrs. Farr leaves a son, Frank, in Westminster, and a daughter, Alice, who lives at home. She was a sister of Mrs. Lucia Chapin, Mrs. Minerva Church, Mrs. Clarissa Allbee of Westminster, Mrs. Ann Atwood of bloodstock, Norman Whitney of Putney, Francis Whitney of Indiana and George Whitney of Colorado.

It is to be noted that Lucretia Whitney's brother Norman married Ellen Mary Farr, sister of Harlan Page
Farr.

Recent acquisition of a newly compiled History of Bridgewater by Gladys Adams disproves the statment in Lucretia (Whitney) Farr's obituary that her grandfather was the first settler of Bridgewater. There were a number of persons there earlier. In fact the census of 1790 shows 60 heads of families, and it wasn't until 1801 that Joshua Whitney arrived on the scene. The above history states:

“Joshua Whitney came to Bridgewater from Wendell NH in 1801 and settled near Bridgewater Hollow. His name appears in Wendell records on a list of those who had just purchased land in town and made some small improvements and then went volenters into the army in differant departments.' Joshua Whitney died Bridgewater Dec 1 1816, age 70, leaving a wife Sarah and ten children some of whom had moved to northern New York."

The ancestry of this Joshua Whitney has not yet been proved by your compiler, which she would like to do in order to establish the relationship between him and the Hannah Whitney who married Samuel Farr (son of Stephen and Mary Taylor).

Ellen May FARR [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3 on 25 Oct 1842 in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, United States. She died 2 on 16 Oct 1922 in Putney, Windham, Vermont, United States. Ellen married 2, 4 Norman Haines WHITNEY on 22 Feb 1871 in Westminster, Windham, Vermont, United States.

The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

Ellen Mary Farr was the only daughter of Ivah Newton and Nancy Farr who had children. She was 13 years 9 days and 3 months younger than her parents oldest child, Henry. By the time Ellen was born the family had moved to Westminster, Vermont, and Ellen grew up there.

Ellen at 29 years of age married Norman Haines (or Haynes) Whitney. He was a brother to Lucretia Whitney who married Harlan Page Farr, Ellen's brother. Norman and Lucretia were children of Joshua and Persis (Moore) Whitney, and Joshua's father (another Joshua) was an early settler of Bridgewater, Vermont, going there from Wendell (now Sunapee), New Hampshire. A correspondent tells me that this Joshua married Sarah (perhaps Haynes) about 1776-7 judging from the fact that the first child recorded at Sunapee was born in May of 1779. It is possible that this was a second marriage, for Joshua was about 30 when he married Sarah. The probability of Sarah having been a Haynes is based on the fact that Joshua's third son was named Haynes. For the benefit of Whitney readers, I give below the children of Joshua and Sarah Whitney, the first ten of which are recorded according to my informant at Sunapee. It is probable that the last two children were born in Bridgewater, Vermont, but not a certainty, and I rather doubt it, for the recent History of Bridgewater indicates that Joshua did not go there until 1501.

I have not been able to prove who the father of Joshua who went to Bridgewater from N. H. Was. I feel it is highly probable that he descended from the same family as did Hannah WhItney who married Samuel Farr many years earlier than the time when this Joshua lived.

I have learned from Ellen's granddaughter (Grace (Whitney) Burbank) that Ellen was keenly interested in the family history. Grace has shared many of Ellen's papers with me, and they have been of considerable assistance, particularly in tracing the lineage of John Danforth, Ellen's grandfather. Ellen died in 1922, and I wasn't born until 1924; yet learning of her interest in genealogy gives me a strong feeling of kinship to this lady who lived so many years ago. I am confident that Ellen would be pleased that her research of family statistical data is being used and will be distributed to family members and a few genealogical libraries for the use of future (and present) generations wanting to know about their ancestors.

A copy of the marriage record for Norman Whitney and Ellen Mary Farr (shown in the record as Mary Ellen) indicates the occupation of the groom to have been "mechanic," and that it was a first marriage for both the bride and groom. The groom's age is given as 43 and the bride's as 28. However, if you subtract Ellen's birth date from the date of her marriage, it appears that in reality she was 29. The couple were married by F. J. Fairbank, minister.

The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

Joseph Farr, Jr. went to live with his Aunt Levina Gray when he was eight years old in Coventry, Vt. This would have been Levina (Reed) Gray, sister to Joseph Jr's mother.

A letter from Mrs. Alice M. Clifford, RFG#1, No. Craftsbury, Vermont, to Ellen Mary (Farr) Whitney asks for a list of her great grandfather Farr's brothers. This great grandfather was Joseph Farr, Sr. She also wrote that she would like to know about Aunt Olive Rugg, David Rugg and John Rugg and Mary Read. She says that in a letter from her great grandpa he had said they all died in four weeks. Another letter from Ellen Rugg who compiled "The Descendants of John Rugg" to Mrs. Whitney refers to these people (Olive, David and John Rugg and Mary Read), and it would appear that Ellen Whitney had written to Ellen Rugg for information to answer Mrs. Clifford's letter.

Being of a curious nature, your compiler wanted to know who these people were and went to "The Descendants of John Rugg" for the answer, being led to that book by Ellen Rugg's letter. It appears that Elizabeth (Rugg) Reed, mother of Hannah (Reed) Farr and mother-in-law of Joseph Farr (Mrs. Clifford's great grandpa) had a brother John. He and his wife had 12 children. One was Olive, and there was a David and a John. Olive died in 1854, not 1818, but David died 6 September 1818 and John died 25 September 1818. Mary Reed, daughter of Quartus and Susanna (Priest) Reed and granddaughter of Elizabeth (Rugg) Reed died 7 September 1818. This accounts for three of the family having died in 1818. Why Mrs. Clifford called Olive 'Aunt," I do not know.

Cosbi BOWMAN was born 1 on 2 Jun 1800 in of Albany, Orleans, Vermont, United States. She died 1 on 17 Jan 1840 in Albany, Orleans, Vermont, United States. Cosbi married Joseph FARR Jr. on 7 Mar 1831 in Vermont, United States.
