After the death of Winfred Roland Farr on 24 May 1906, his widow and son moved out west. I regret deeply that I am unable to contact any possible descendants of Yale Farr for inclusion ifl this book.

Set forth below are copies of two newspaper items attesting to the tragic early death of Winfred Roland Farr.

“W. R. Farr COMMITS SUICIDE WHILE DESPONDENT WAS ESTIMABLE YOUNG MAN.
“The public was greatly shocked by the tragic death of Winfred R. Farr of this place, who committed suicide Thursday afternoon about five or six o'clock, cutting his throat with a razor. During the afternoon he went into a field some distance from the house of W. S. Yale to work in a garden he had there. Failing to return at the usual time search was made and his dead body was found in a clump of bushes near the garden. He had been in poor health for some time, being despondent, and his friends had been apprehensive of some tragedy. Mr. Farr was a native of Westminster in this State. He was 32 years old and three years ago married Mary Yale, only child of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Yale, who, with a little son, survives him. He was a man of fine character and was respected by all our people. He possessed fine business ability and an unusual amount of energy; but he was not physically strong. He owned real estate in Westnjjnster. There will be a prayer service at his late home Saturday morning at 7:30 o'clock. The body will be taken to Westminster Station for inter­ment and funeral services there at 2:30.” -

The second item is headed “WESTMINSTER” and reads as follows:

“The funeral of the late Winfred Roland Farr of Charlotte was held here at his old home at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The services were conducted by the Rev. Gulick of Charlotte, assisted by the Rev. DeBevoies, his former pastor. The great floral tribute and the many friends bore evidence of the high esteem in which the young nan was held. Among those who were in attendance from out of town were John I. Farr of Stockton, Kans., Mrs. W. R. Farr, W. S. Yale, Wm. Gulick of Charlotte, Mary Farr of Johnson, Charles Cook of Rutland, Gertrude M. Farr of Athol, Mass., Harriet N. Farr of Bernardston, Mass., sisters of the deceased, H. F. Farr, Alice Farr, Norman Whitney, Harlie Whitney and Ida Whitney of Putney, Winslow Barnett and John Proctor of Walpole, N. H. The deceased was buried in the family lot in the old cemetery.”

It is to be noted that Winfred's brother, Willis V. Farr, is not listed as attending from out-of-town. Willis daughter Mattie was born at Westminster in 1905, and it is assumed that Willis was living at Westminster when his brother committed suicide.

For those of you who would like to visit the graves of Joseph and Hannah Farr, take route 30 from Townsend, Vermont. Turn sharp right to Windham. Go 5.8 miles. The cemetery is the second one on the right beside the road from Townsend to Windham Four Corners. This is a beautiful section of Vermont, and you will enjoy the magnificent countryside.

THE FAMILY OF IVAH NEWTON FARR

The obituary for Ivah Newton Farr reads:

"Westminster
"Ivah Newton Farr died at his late residence Monday morning, aged 92 years, 4 months. He was born in Chesterfield, N. H., and was one of the fifth generation from John Farr an early settler of Massachusetts. He has held many positions of trust and took an active part in public affairs keeping well posted in political matters and was deeply interested in the silver campaign. He had been a member of the Congregational Church for more than sixty years, and always contributed liberally to its support. His funeral was held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Farr was the last of many children of Joseph Farr and raised a large family all but one of whom survive him, namely:
Sylvester N. Farr of Evona, Mo., Henry Farr of Swanzey, N. H., Harlan P. Farr and Mrs. Norman Whitney of Putney, Vt., Robert D. Farr, Mrs. Wm. B.Clay, and Mrs. Edwin Fenton of Westminster."

Obituaries are very helpful to the genealogist, and it is most satisfying when vital statistics bear out the statements found in them. Such is not the case in the above obituary. I have visited Ivah Newton Farr's grave in the Court House Hill Cemetery, Westminster, Vermont, and his stone bears the following inscription:

"IVAH N. FARR
Died Nov 2, 1896
AE. 91 yrs. 3 mos."

A copy of page 118 of a Westminster book of vital statistics headed "for the year ending December 31, A. D. 1896," which I obtained by writing to the town clerk at Westminster, indicates as item No. 15 that Ivah N. Farr died 2 Nov of that year at 91 years, 2 mos. and 21 days, that he was a widower and died of "old age." The entry also shows Ivah Newton Farr to have been born at Westmoreland, N. H., the son of Joseph and Hannah (Reed) Farr.

As to having descended fifth generation from John Farr, an early settler of Massachusetts, this does not appear to be true. As stated in early pages of this book, the best evidence available is that Ivah Newton Farr was fifth generation from Samuel Farr.

However, regardless of these inconsistencies, Ivah Newton Farr lived and died and became the ancestor of a number of people living today, some of whom bear the name of Farr, and many of whom I have been in contact with during the compiling of this book.

The fact that tvah Newton Farr was associated with the Westminster Congregatonai church is attested to by a stained glass window which is still there and which bears the name "FARR," and by a note in the handwriting of his granddaughter, Harriet Nancy Farr, which indicates that the window was given by Ivah N. Farr and his children, John V. Farr, Robert Farr, Harlan Farr, Semira (Farr) Clay, Whitman. Harriet adds: "I think these were all that gave. There were Henry Farr, Swanzey, N. H., Sarah Farr Fenton, N. Dakota, and Sylvester Farr, Missouri."

It is interesting to note that many years after Ivah Newton Farr died, his great, great granddaughter, Jeanne Lois Farr (daughter of John Elbridge and Marion Scott (Hyer) Farr) chose this Congregational church as the place for her marriage to William Semonite on 11 July 1953. I attended that wedding and I can also remember going to at least one church service at the Westminster church with my great aunt, Harriet Nancy Farr.

And making Ivah Newton Farr more human than mere vital statistics can do, there is an envelope which has come to me on which is written "I. N. Farr's Hair." Inside the envelope is a lock of some very soft white hair.

When I was a child there were yearly reunions of the descendants of Ivah Newton Farr. Some of these I attended. I remember one with particular vividness. That one was held at Vilas Pool, Alstead, New Hampshire. These are no longer held, and it is a pity that they ceased, but Ivah Newton's descendants are now spread throughout New England and stretch to California and Washington State and into Kansas and Missouri, New Jersey and Virginia. It would be difficult for these people to gather at a central place annually.

Ivah Newton Farr married his first wife at Grafton, Vermont, and later after her death and the raising of a large family being left a widower, Ivah Newton married his first wife's sister.

Ivab Newton Farr and both of his wives are buried at the Court House Hill Cemetery, Westrnirtter. All three names are on one stone, one name each on each of three sides. The inscriptions for Nancy and Mary Ann read:

Another item concerning the death of I. N. Farr:
“The venerable Ivah N. Farr, next to the oldest person in town, died Monday morning. His birthplace was in the town of Chesterfield, N. H., where he was born over 91 years ago. After living in various places in this state and New Hampshire he removed to this place 54 years ago with his family where he has continued to live until his death. He was the last of a family of 11 children, nine of whom lived to mature years. Mr. Farr is survived by seven children as follows: Harlan P. and Mrs. Norman Whitney of Putney, Robert D., Mrs. N. S. Clay and Mrs. E. L. Finton of this place, Sylvester who resides in the west and Henry who lives in New Hampshire. He has held a number of town offices and been a prominent member of the Congregational church in this place for many years. Although a cripple for a long time he has taken a lively interest in all matters of public interest. He will be greatly missed in the family circle. The funeral will be attended at his home this afternoon.”

Descendants of Henry Ivah are living today and some bear the Farr name. One of these is Henry's grandson, Leslie Joseph Farr. He and his wife live on Court Street in Keene, New Hampshire. My mother and Leslie remained good friends and kept in touch with each other through­out my mother's life, as did Leslie's father and my mother's father (Oscar and Willis Farr) throughout their lives. Leslie and his wife visited my mother in Maine after she moved there on several occasions, and during the last year of her life they made a special trip to see her as she lay so sick in the hospital at Lewiston. they stayed with my husband and me at that time. We now correspond occasionally, and the summer of 1976 my husband's cousin Charlene and I called on the Farr's when we passed through Keene. They told us of their Senior Citizens activities and of a trip they had taken the previous winter to England, Scotland and Ireland and shared pictures taken during the trip with us. I have vivid memories of seeing my grandfather Willis Farr and Leslie's father, Oscar Farr, visiting with each other during Farr reunions when I was a child. Happiness showed in their faces as they talked and it was evident they enjoyed seeing each other.

The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

Sylvester, the second son of Ivah Newton Farr and his wife Nancy, married in New York State in 1360 and was in Iowa in 1865 when his son was born. Iowa was the 29th state admitted to the Union in 1846. There was flat and fertile farmland which lured many settlers from the East, as well as European immigrants. Railroads were built across the state beginning in the middle 1800's.

Sylvester's only daughter died in Missouri in 1879, showing that Sylvester moved there, whether directly from Iowa or not is not known. Missouri's early growth was due to fur and lead, but before long the rich soil there attracted many farmers. Missouri was admitted to the Union in 1821 as the 24th state.

Sylvester died in Oklahoma in 1905 indicating that he also lived in Oklahoma. Oklahoma was the 47th state to be admitted to the Union - in 1907. The Reader's Digest Family Encyclopedia of American History tells us that the first railroad crossed what is now Oklahoma in 1872. The railroad brought “land hungry squatters” called “boomers” who wanted to exploit the fertile, unassigned land in the center of the Indian Territory. At first Federal troops cleared the squatters off, but they grew in number and were determined. In 1889 President Benjamin Harrison opened a two-million acre tract to homesteaders. At the sound of a pistol on April 22nd at noon, 50,000 some whites pound into the “Oklahoma district” to stake their claIms. There were soon similar runs for other tracts of land, and eastern Oklahoma was organized as the Oklahoma Territory in 1890. Did Sylvester take advantage of one of these runs? Wouldn't it be interesting to know.

Sylvester obviously had an adventurous nature. I do not know if he ever returned to Vermont after leaving it. Information is scanty concerning Sylvester's life, but it is safe to conclude that he was a courageous man who like many other early settlers pushed beyond the boundaries of' New England to make a new life for himself.

Sylvester's grandson William and his wife Elsie have an announcement or the death of Alida B. (Starin) Farr, edged in black. It reads:

Subtracting her birth date from her death date results in an age of' 87 years, 5 months, 16 days. However, there is some question whether she was born in August or September. If her death announcement is correct, she was born in August.

for this lady and quote it below. It gives us an insight into her life and personality.

"PUTNEY. Life Sketch of Mrs. Nancy Semira Whitman. "Mrs. Nancy Semira Whitman, 76, whose death, Jan. 8. was mentioned in last week's Reformer, was born in Grafton, July 25, 1832, a daughter of Iver Newton and Nancy (Danforth) Farr and one of a family of eight children, all of whom lived to be over 60 years of age. Mrs. Whitman was in the fifth generation from Daniel Farr and Lawrence Walton, both settling in Chesterfield, N. H., about 1760, Daniel Farr coming from Stow, Mass. Both these ancestors were soldiers in the war of the revolution. Her mother was born in Templeton, Mass., and was a descendant of John Danforth of Billerica, Mass. When Mrs. Whitman was 10 years of age her parents and family moved to Westminster, where most of her life was spent with the exception of one year in Bellows Falls and eight In Putney. Mrs. Whitman received her education in Saxtons River and Westminster under the instruction of John Goldsburg and L. F. Ward. At the age of 18 she began her work as a teacher. She taught successfully for several years, but, her health failing, she was obliged to give up the work for a few years. Regaining her health she again took up her chosen work, teaching a select school which was very successful. She was a thorough scholar and had a correct memory, and the ability to impart her knowledge to the young. Many of her former pupils have late in life thanked her for her faithfulness to them while under her instruction. Mrs. Whitman was a member of the Congregational church at Westminster, joining when 15 years of age, and when health permitted was an active worker. At the last rollcall of the church she was acknowleded to be its oldest member.

"Mrs. Whitman had a fine ChrIstian character and her interest was shown in all Christian work. She was especially interested in the young and was ready to render a helping hand to all who where in need. During the last seven years of her life she had been a great sufferer from rheumatism, being helpless and confined to the bed, but during all this time her sufferings had been uncomplainingly borne. No word of murmuring or complaint was ever given utterance. Mrs. Whitman was twice married, her first husband being William Clay of Putney, who died in 1896. Dec. 25, 1898, she married Ira E. Whitman of Bellows Falls. Mrs. Whitman is survived by her husband, two brothers, H. P. Farr of Putney and R. D. Farr of Westminster, two sisters, Mrs. N. H. Whitney of Putney, and Mrs. E. F. Finton of Michigan. The funeral was held at her late home in Putney Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. L. W. Morey or the Congregational church officiating. Mrs. H. L. Bailey sang Nearer My God to Thee and Abide with Me. The burial was in the old church yard in Westminster, Rev. G. H. DeBevoise of Walpole, N. H., officiating at the committal service. The following is from "The Family of Willis Vernon Farr" by Jayne E. Bickford:

There follows accounts of the death of Louise's third great grandmother, Lucretia (Whitney) Farr. I found these accounts among my mother's papers after her death and presume they originally belonged to my grandfather, Willis Vernon Farr. It is stated in one of the accounts that Lucretia's grandfather, Joshua Whitney, was the first settler of Bridgewater, Vermont, but this is disproved (see last page of this section).

“Mrs. Harlan Farr died Saturday after an illness of less than two weeks, although she had not been in good health for a long time. They had this spring moved into the village and she was anticipating much pleasure in her new surroundings but she had a stroke of paralysis and steadily declined. She was a very social woman, a kind neighbor and will be much missed. She leaves only one child a daughter of fifteen. Her funeral was attended by Revs. Wiswall and Mitchell on Monday and she was buried beside her son in Westminster.”

“She leaves only one child a daughter of fifteen” of course, was an incorrect statement, and the following account of Mrs. Farr's death correctly shows her to have also left a son.

“Death of Mrs. Harlan P. Farr
“Lucretia Whitney, 61, wife of Harlan P. Farr, died about 9 o'clock Saturday morning from the effects of a shock of paralysis May 3. She had had heart disease for over a year, and under the strain of the paralytic stroke her heart was unable to maintain its action. Mrs. Farr was born in Bridgewater, this state, in that part of the town known as Bridgewater Hollow. Her father was Joshua Whitney, whose father was the first settler in Bridgewater. Her father died In 1848, and when she was 16 years old the moved to Westminster with her mother. She married Mr. Farr of Westminster and continue to live there until they moved to East Putney, where, for many years, Mr. Farr has been a prosperous farnier, working several hundred acres of land. About two months ago Mr. Farr bought and moved into the F. 0. Pierce house, on the Brattleboro road in this village. Mrs. Farr was striken with paralysis while working in her kitchen, and steadily failed until the end. The funeral was held at the house at 1 o'clock Monday, Rev. E. F. Mitchell officiating. The burial was in Westminster. Besides her husband Mrs. Farr leaves a son, Frank, in Westminster, and a daughter, Alice, who lives at home. She was a sister of Mrs. Lucia Chapin, Mrs. Minerva Church, Mrs. Clarissa Allbee of Westminster, Mrs. Ann Atwood of bloodstock, Norman Whitney of Putney, Francis Whitney of Indiana and George Whitney of Colorado.

Recent acquisition of a newly compiled History of Bridgewater by Gladys Adams disproves the statment in Lucretia (Whitney) Farr's obituary that her grandfather was the first settler of Bridgewater. There were a number of persons there earlier. In fact the census of 1790 shows 60 heads of families, and it wasn't until 1801 that Joshua Whitney arrived on the scene. The above history states:

“Joshua Whitney came to Bridgewater from Wendell NH in 1801 and settled near Bridgewater Hollow. His name appears in Wendell records on a list of those who had just purchased land in town and made some small improvements and then went volenters into the army in differant departments.' Joshua Whitney died Bridgewater Dec 1 1816, age 70, leaving a wife Sarah and ten children some of whom had moved to northern New York."

The ancestry of this Joshua Whitney has not yet been proved by your compiler, which she would like to do in order to establish the relationship between him and the Hannah Whitney who married Samuel Farr (son of Stephen and Mary Taylor).
