“WALTER P. FARR
“Walter P. Farr, a former resident of East Swanzey and Spofford, and for the past 20 years a resident of New Britain, Conn., died in that city Thursday following an illness of several months.

'Funeral services will be held in the funeral home of Charles F. Fletcher, 33 Marlboro street, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Robbins E. Ralph, pastor of the Court Street Congregational Church, will officiate. Friends are invited. Interment will be in the Village Cemetery, Spofford.

“Mr. Farr was born in Putney, Vt., June 4, 1866, the son of Henry I. and Sarah E. (Wright) Farr. He married the late Gertrude M. Sirnonds Nov. 30, 1889, and of this union one daughter survives, Mrs. Harry Eurnharn of Kensington, Conn. He later marrIed Etta Wheeler, who died several years ago.

'Besides his daughter, he is survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. J. P. McIntosh, and a grand­son, Carl Burnham, both of Kensington; two nephews, Leslie J. Farr of Keene and Percy Farr of Brattleboro, Vt., and two great-grandchildren.

Bessie tells me that the early generations of her Merriam family were of Concord, Massachusetts. Perhaps the mother of Mary Taylor who married ¹Samuel Farr was of the same family.

Leslie Farr was a veteran of World War I. He was the Republican representative from Ward 5 to the State legislative body for the 1957-58 term. He was also President of the State Federation of Letter Carriers of New Eampehire in 1935, National State Vice President of the National Letter Carriers for New Hampshire in 1952-53 and the New Hampshire State Representative in 1954 to Cleveland, Ohio.

He is a charter member of the Federal Retired Employees, Cheshire Chapter 529, and Past President and a charter mem­ber of the State Federation. He presently holds a Gold Card, National Association of Letter Carriers.

He has been a member of the Golden Rod Grange of Swanzey for 66 years and holds a sixty-year certificate. He has been a member of Paquoig Lodge of Odd Fellows for sixty- one years and is a Past Grand Master of the same.

Leslie's wife has always shared her husband's activities. She was ten years in the State Auxiliary of the N. A. L. C., is a Past President of the organization and received a Life Membership State Pin. They both are active in the Keene Senior Citizen's Association and have taken a number of trips with this group.

“Golden Wedding Observed by Farrs
“Mr. and Mrs. Leslie J. Farr celebrated their golden wedding anniversay Sept. 13 from 2 pm. to 5 p.m. in the parlor of the United Church of Christ. “Mr. and Mrs. Farr were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Merriam, in Marlborough on Sept. 9, 1920. They have one son, Robert M. Farr, two grandsons and granddaughters living at Studio City, California. They were not able to be present for the recep­tion. The name Merriam appears as “Merrian" in the article, and I have taken the liberty to correct this error. Also it should have shown two grand­sons and one granddaughter.

“Gertrude Merriam, Mrs. Farr's sister, who served as bridesmaid at their wedding, was in the receiving line at their reception as was Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hagar. Mr. Hagar is Mr. Farr's nephew. “A highlight at the reception was the appear­ance of the Rev. S. Burnham Long with his wife and daughter. The Rev. Long was the minister who married Mr. and Mrs. Farr. He is now living at Worcester, Mass. “During the reception the Rev. Oliver Francisco played on the piano and Audrey Cummings sang solos. Then a tape recording was played bringing greetings from Mr. and Mrs. Farr's son, his wife and their grandchildren. “Friends assisted at the reception. An anni­versary cake, made by Mrs. Shirlee Crotto, was served by her. “Flowers from relatives, lodges and friends added more to the tables. Gifts, money, money trees and many cards were received by Mr. and Mrs. Farr. “Relatives and friends were present from Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire.”

My mother's brother, John E. Farr', and his wife of Westminster Station, Vermont, also attended this anniversary party.

Leslie Farr was employed for many years by the post office at Keene, New Hampshire.

Brief Life History
At the close of the Revolutionary War, he and his wife and young son, George, moved from an English colonial settlement in the state of Maryland and located at Fort Beard or Beards Block House, as is was sometimes called, on or near the site of the little town of Bardstown, now the Nelson County seat in Kentucky. This was during the 1780's. The land in this area and north of the Ohio River was still wilderness. He got there by traveling the Wilderness Road blazed by Daniel Boone. Son James was born at the Fort. Sadly his wife died soon after. Discouraged over the loss of his helpmate, he decided to move back to his old home and friends in Maryland. A neighbor, Mrs. Tucker, asked to keep the baby as it wasn't safe to travel in the hostile wilderness until he was older and Benjamin could return for him. So Benjamin and his young son, George, headed back east never to be heard from again. Son James in later years and his foster parents, the Tuckers, made inquiries. It was believed by his Kentucky friends that a roving band of savages had overtaken and massacred them. Another account of this story has Benjamin leaving his 4 year old son, James, with the McCarty family, who were living with the Thomas Curry family in Kentucky.

Elizabeth COCHRANE was born in 1767 in Fairfax, Virginia, British Colonial America. She died in Dec 1789 in Fort Beard, Nelson, Kentucky. Elizabeth married ^{1, 2} Benjamin FARRAR on 10 Mar 1789 in Goochland, Virginia, United States.
