Helen L. Christman, 91, of Elmira, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.

Helen was born Feb. 8, 1916 in Sayre, the daughter of the late Joseph F. Sr. and Mary Tereschi Cost.

She is survived by: her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph F. Jr. and Phyliss Cost, of Sayre; sister Theresa Krotzer of Vestal; nephews Thomas (Bert) Cockroft of Kissimmee, Fla., John (Sharon) Krotzer of Vestal, and Joseph F. (Linda) Cost III of Elmira; nieces Louise (Arnold) Gavette of Van Etten and Patricia (Andy) Gibson of Va.; several great-nieces and -nephews; and many special, caring friends. Helen was predeceased by: her husband, Percy J. Christman; brothers Thomas, Vincent and Paul Cost; sisters Elizabeth Alamo and Catherine Cockroft; and her niece, Mary Ellen Miller.

Helen graduated from Sayre High School, where she was the school's first drum majorette. She loved bingo and to knit and crochet. She donated her labors of love to many charitable organizations, but most of all she enjoyed her dear friends. She was a social "butterfly" who was always ready to go. She was interested in everyone, and she was interesting. She will be missed.

Interment of her cremains will be at St. James Cemetery, Waverly, in spring 2008. Donations in Helen's memory may be directed to St. Joseph's Hospital SNF, 555 E. Market St., Elmira NY 14901. Arrangements by McInerny Funeral Home.

Milford W. Farr, 96, of 414 N. Wilbur Ave., Sayre, Pa., passed away surrounded by his family at the Robert Packer Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, following a brief illness.

He was born on Oct. 28, 1920 in Sayre, Pa., the son of the late Albert and Anna (Kithcart) Farr.

Milford worked as an engineer on the Lehigh Valley Railroad until his retirement in 1982 and served as president of the Sayre School Board for many years. Milford served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 as a drill instructor. He loved spending time with his wife Kate, family and friends – especially at the family cottage he built on Cayuga Lake, where he loved to fish. Milford loved working in his garden and enjoyed growing his own plants from seed and gave many plants away to friends. He worked in his garden up to last season. He enjoyed small game hunting with his beagles and was an avid deer and other large game hunter. He was a lifetime member of the Sayre Sportsman’s Club and the Elks. Milford loved westerns and any film starring John Wayne. He could never turn away a good fish fry. He was a member of the Penn State Alumni Association and held season tickets.

Milford was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, the former Kathryn Sabin, in 1999 and his brother Roy and sister Geraldine.

Milford is survived by his sons Richard (Maureen) Farr of Waverly and Thomas Farr of Sayre and his daughter MaryAnn (Lee) Berrettini of Sayre. His grandchildren David (Becky) Farr – Pittsburgh, Daniel (Brittany) Farr – Kentucky, Bryan Farr – Massachusetts, Leslie (Michael) Canavan – Athens, Christopher (Wendi) Berrettini – Wyoming, Michael (Heidi) Berrettini – Candor. Great-grandchildren, Brandon, Josh, Aiden, Grady Kate, Katie, Ryan, Emily, Dominick, Beth, and Tyler. Two great-great-granddaughters, Ariyah and Veyda, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will gather at Tomasso’s in Waverly, N.Y., from 2-3:30 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017.

A private burial will be at the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Milford’s memory to the: Sayre Historical Society Museum, P.O. Box 311, Sayre, PA 18840 or a charity of one’s choice.
