As a young man he came to Michigan and established his residence at Forester, Sanilac county, where he engaged in the work of his trade and where he built up a large and profitable business, as his services were much in demand in connection with the operations of the lumber companies that were then operating upon an extensive scale in this part of the state. He there married and his work and his home continued to represent his paramount interests until he responded to the call of higher duty and went forth in defense of the integrity of the Union. At the inception of the Civil war he enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Volunteer Infantry, with which command he proceeded to the front.
